Validating component specifications

Reliable and high performance designs need confidence in component selection and parameters. Testing components for their specifications provides tools for informed decisions:

• Actual performance of components (i.e. how optimistic datasheet values are)
• Sampled variance of component parameter values
• e.g. from a batch of 100 parts, how many meet given specifications
• How components behave outside manufacturer-specified example conditions

Testing

Common tests for components

• Transistors:
• Pulsed power handling capability (safe operating area)
• IV-curves (I_DS vs V_DS vs V_GS etc.)
• Oscillators & resonators:
• Frequency tolerance
• Frequency stability
• Three-point temperature dependence
• DC amplifiers:
• Gain
• Common-mode rejection ratio
• Power supply rejection ratio
• Input / output impendance

Standard testing temperature: stabilized 25°C or elevated 60°C

Inputs from customer:

• Type and amount of components
• Customer can supply components if more convenient
• Which parameters to be validated or tests to be performed
• Component-specific details (mounting, heatsinking etc.)

Testing process:

• Test-specific mounting fixtures (PCBs) for components are designed & assembled
• Online real-time tracking of testing process
• A compiled test report and all raw data is provided to the customer
• Estimated timeline:
• Fixture design & assembly: 1-2 weeks
• Testing: 1 week
